American Cosplay

Published by hellokitty at 12:58 am under Costume Websites Edit This

On eBay, I just spotted a pair of Chobits ears going for a mere $9.99.

This made my eyebrow quirk because last year, and in 2006, similar cosplay accessories were going for upwards of $30.00. Is this a reflection of the sagging American economy, or a sign that cosplay is passing as a national interest? As we get closer to September, the Halloween costume profiteers should be suiting up and hitting cosplay consumers hard. Cosplay has grown in popularity among anime and manga fans in America over the past few years, but the sluggish uptake on the Halloween season my be a sign of new things to come.

Meanwhile, the industry continues to flourish year-round in Japan. So maybe the clunky descendants of Germans, Scots, Irish, Polish and African anime fans just don’t look as ‘kawaii’ in kitty ears and robot accessories as our Japanese counterparts…but our hearts are in it. Here’s to hoping cosplay hasn’t reached it’s peak in the States.
